President Tim Howe called the meeting to order at 4:35 p.m..

Treasurer Warren Casey gave his financial report:
2007 Rebates $128
Balance $1,031.58
Etude sales $1,200

Old Business:

Clay Hooten gave the report of the Jazz Etude sales. 100 schools purchased the new tryout music, however, some schools did not pay (still owe) and some schools did not purchase the music at all, yet had students audition. Clay will check the participation list from ASBOA with the sales list from the publisher.

Comments in general were favorable with the change in tryout material. The following is a list of problems and suggestions.
1. Trumpet melodic content too difficult.
2. Trombone same.
3. Transposition issue with publisher.
4. First 3 tracks on CD were mislabeled.
5. Add 3rd track without the drums.
6. Include more articulation and dynamic markings.
7. Add tune changes to title, as in Etude 1, based on changes to ___________.
8. Region Improvisation should be easier and the All-State improvisation should be more difficult.
9. Mixed reviews on the quality of the MIDI recordings.

The Tryout committee stated that plans were in place to record with live rhythm section this year. Another suggestion from the floor mentioned making a recommended recordings list for each etude to study style.

The following section in italics is considered moot since the bankruptcy of IAJE:

President Howe gave a report from the International Convention in Toronto. We received Exemplary Status again this year, so the state unit will receive one full paid convention fee. The next IAJE convention will be in Seattle for 2009.

IAJE recommended the following changes for state unit officer configuration: reduce to 4 officers: President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Arkansas can keep its 6-officer format or change back to the 4-officer format we had in the past.

IAJE also announced a change in title for state organizations from Unit to Chapter.

ABA:

President Howe has had discussions with ABA President John Combs. ABA has requested that we fund clinicians who will focus more on the public school teaching situation. Suggested topics included Rehearsal Techniques (Tom Davis SUNY) and Starting a Jazz Program with Limited Instrumentation.

ABA felt that the live reading band was becoming obsolete with internet capabilities and recommended that we use the band for the clinic session. A blog site is now available through ABA/ASBOA to get suggestions for additional topics for the future.

A motion from the floor recommended for the Arkansas Unit to supplement the ABA fee by $100. Todd Johnson moved, Warren Casey seconded, motion passed.

ABA also requested clinics on the tryout material. Composers of the etudes were asked to perform 30-minute masterclasses on their instrument’s etudes. A rhythm section will be available for the entire session.

New Business:

Warren Casey moved, Jackie Lamar seconded that the Arkansas Unit form a committee to look at special projects in order to maximize the benefit of our new income level. Motion Passed. President Howe selected the following members of the Special Projects Committee: Scott Maddox, Todd Johnson, Robin Ratliff, Mike Underwood, Tim Howe.
The membership was requested to e-mail their suggestions for projects to President Howe.

Jackie Lamar announced that UCA was a pilot test site for materials from the Traditional Jazz Education Network. These materials will be available soon for free to school programs from TJEN, 5537 Belle Pond Dr., Centreville, VA 20120.

Suggestion from the floor for an Intercollegiate Jazz Band, with Thursday rehearsal, to perform after the All-State Jazz Bands, and providing a venue for the clinicians to solo with the college band rather than the All-State Bands. No action.

Suggestion from the floor to continue to look at the All-State Jazz rehearsal schedule. No action.

Clay Hooten requestion permission to look for a used booth to purchase for IAJE for ABA convention which could also be used at All-Region Concerts. Motion was made by Warren Casey, Larry Jones Second to authorize a budget of $200 for this project. Motion passed.

Bill Spainhour, ASBOA Jazz Chair/ex-officio ARIAJE member, requested suggestions for 2009 Jazz Clinicians.

Meeting adjourned at 5:20 p.m.
