International Association of Jazz Educators Minutes July 28, 2006 President Clay Hooten called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. The minutes from the February 17, 2006 meeting were approved as circulated. Treasurer Warren Casey presented the financial report. The end or year balance was $942.87. No income was received from IAJE apportionments this year due to expenses from the Waco Regional Conference. The unit raised $600 from the web-site sale to Fowler Enterprises, thanks to Bill Halbrook. Expenses for the ABA booth was $255.00, leaving the chapter with a current balance of $717.87. Special guest Curt Wilson from Texas Christian University was introduced and thanked for his excellent clinic “You Want Me To Do A Jazz Band” and for conducting the IAJE Reading Band. Thanks were extended to all who participated in the IAJE Reading Band. Old Business: Thanks were made to Bill Halbrook for his willingness to provide the service of web design as a fund-raising project. President Hooten gave the membership a report of activity at the booth the chapter set up at ABA. A back-drop and materials were provided by IAJE and the chapter’s survey was distributed. There was steady activity and a lot of interest at the booth. Secretary Lamar gave a report of the status of the 10-year survey project. The survey instrument was edited and copies were made available at the booth. Julia Reynolds has been contacted about putting the survey up on the ASBOA web site. President Hooten showed the certificate from the Arkansas Governor’s office proclaiming April as Jazz Appreciation month. President Hooten reported his discussions with the IAJE Regional Coordinator, Rick Condit, about creating our own set of All-State Jazz tryout material. Committees were formed to compose tryout material to be presented to the ASBOA Jazz Committee for review by the All-State meeting. The deadline for each committee to have music ready for review is December 15. Each committee was requested to compose music of the same average difficulty of the current set of material. The committees are as follows: Saxophone: Warren Casey, Gary Meggs, Jackie Lamar Trumpet: Chuck Booker, Larry Jones Trombone: Tim Howe, Clay Hooten Rhythm Section: Rick Endel, C. E. Askew, Les Pack, Mick Johnson, Jim Greeson Rick Endel volunteered to make the accompaniment and demonstration CD’s. Discussion was held regarding the printing of the material, President Hooten volunteered to explore some options for that. New Business: Members who attended TMEA said that the Texas IAJE members provided 30-minute demonstration clinics on their tryout material. Discussion was held regarding the Arkansas tryout committees to be prepared to do the same at ABA, 2007. Warren Casey moved that the group explore providing a session at ABA on jazz tryout judge certification. ASBOA is going to require this for concert band tryouts, so IAJE would like to assist the ASBOA in providing information for jazz judges. Motion passed. Membership pamphlets were distributed for prospective members. Bill Halbrook reminded everyone to send in concert and event information for the web site calendar of events.
