Arkansas Unit
International Association of Jazz Educators Minutes 7-29-05 President Hooten called the meeting to order at 4:30 p.m. Attendance: Clay Hooten, Warren Casey, Joy Wilkins, Adam Coats, Craig Wadley, Aaron VanLaan, Becky Cavender, Lowell Cavender, Brian Lassiter, Joseph Larry, Gary Meggs, Les Pack, Lauren Russell, Valerie Tobin, Katrina Struckman, James Pianalto, Robin Ratliff, Scott Maddox, Bill Halbrook and Jackie Lamar Treasurer’s report: See Below$514.32 (Regional Assessment of $200 not paid yet) Treasurer Casey informed the membership that he had not been able to reach the proper person to send the assessment for the IAJE Regional Conference. The minutes from the previous meeting in February were circulated. Old Business: Bill Halbrook has volunteered to provide web design services to help raise money for the state unit. He has produced a flyer to be circulated via ASBOA to publicize an auction, with bidding to begin at $400. There will also be a link on the www.ariaje.org site. The motion passed. New Business: President Hooten outlined four goals for the state unit. 1. New memberships, publicize the benefits of membership to music educators and jazz educators in the state. 2. E-mail directors and create a new director mailout about the Jan. 11-14 International conference. 3. Increase the projects of the Arkansas Unit to reach Exemplary Status (10 projects). 4. Increase our account balance via fundraising, new membership, and sponsors. Warren Casey proposed that we focus fundraising efforts toward a commissioning project. He suggested that we try to commission one or two works for the Arkansas All-State Jazz Bands. Motion passed. Dr. Casey agreed to investigate commissioning fees. Announcements: Hot Springs Jazz Festival, September 9-11 featuring the Randy Brecker Quintet on Saturday at 6:00 p.m. Clay Hooten will be hosting a jazz improvisation clinic at Dardanelle this fall. We are anticipating the possibility of additional revenue for our Unit by way of the website auction project. If that goes as planned, we hope to generate additional funds to pursue special projects that will benefit Arkansas students who are interested in playing and promoting Jazz and jazz education. If anyone has a project idea that would benefit our students, please let me or Clay Hooten, Arkansas Unit President know about it. Submitted by Warren Casey |
