International Association for Jazz Education
Arkansas Unit

President Endel called the meeting to order at 4:30.

Attendance:
Becky Cavendar, Bill Halbrook, Warren Casey, Tim Howe, Clay Hooten, Donna Maher, Michael Williamson, Rick Endel and Jackie Lamar. Guest Rick Condit, Arkansas All-State Jazz II Clinician and Regional IAJE Coordinator.

Old Business:
The Regional IAJE Conference at Baylor, April 16-17 will have performances by the following Arkansas representatives: Univ. of Arkansas at Fort Smith Jazz Choir, Univ. of Central Arkansas Jazz Ensemble, and Jackie Lamar clinic on “Jazz for the Jazz-Challenged.” Several Arkansas students have been selected for the College All-Star Jazz Band:
Brandon Dorris, lead tenor, UCA
Blake Howerton, Bone II, ASU
Aaron Ewing, drums, UAFS.
President Endel reported from the IAJE Convention in Long Beach about new criteria for State Units. There are new guidelines for different levels of participation that will contribute different amounts toward a state representative at the IAJE convention.

Exemplary Status (10 projects, 100%), Meritorious Status (5 projects, 50%), Functioning Status (2 projects, 25%). Currently the Arkansas Unit has the following projects: IAJE Reading Band at ABA, Plaques for All-State Clinicians, Clinic Sessions at All-State, and Support for All-State Jazz through ASBOA. Guidelines now required are:
1. Election process (we need to revise).
2. Constitution (have on web site).
3. Pre-conference officer training at IAJE, President or President-Elect must attend.
4. At least 2 meetings per year (All-State and ABA).
5. Minutes (on web site and distributed at meetings).
6. Annual reports (President & Treasurer due in July).
7. Newsletters.
Bill Halbrook was appointed chairman of the nominating committee to develop a new slate of officers according to the new guidelines. The election will be held prior to ABA by either mail or e-mail. Other members are Donna Maher, and Tim Howe. The membership was asked to submit nominations to Bill Halbrook at halbrook@arkansas.net.

New Business:
Treasurer’s Report: Current balance is $517, but we owe $200 for State Assessment for Regional Conference and cost of All-State Clinician’s plaques.

Clinic Topics: A number of ideas were discussed. The consensus was to organize a clinic on judging of the All-State Jazz Tryouts.

New Projects:
1. Recommending to ASBOA that a representative from IAJE be allowed to be an ex-officio member of the All-State Jazz Committee.
2. Recommending style and articulation for the All-State Jazz Tryout material.
3. Redo the survey that was completed in 1996 of the status of jazz education in Arkansas.
4. Develop a set of guidelines for All-State Jazz Tryouts and find an ASBOA member in each region to send the proposal through for consideration. Clay Hooten volunteered to chair a group to prepare the proposal.
5. Reading Band at ABA
6. Fundraiser: Solicit businesses and individuals to become Associate members of IAJE because the state unit receives a larger rebate from these memberships. Bill Halbrook volunteered his services as a Web Designer to auction off a business web site with proceeds donated to the Arkansas Unit.
7. Write an article for the AMEA Journal about the Arkansas participation in the Regional IAJE Conference.
